Cut Stock Operations

WOOD CUT STOCK PLANTS FOR MOULDINGS & WINDOW / DOOR PARTS

A. G. Raymond & Company has assisted a number of clients to design and install facilities for cutting softwood lumber into rough and semi-machined blanks for moulding and window/door production.  In these engagements  our responsibilities have included (i) preliminary and detailed design of the overall layout plus all materials handling, (ii) preparation of equipment specifications for conveyorization and dust extraction, (iii) selection of equipment vendors, and (iv) installation/start-up oversight.

The primary processing lines typically consist of a double surfacer for calibrating board thickness, a high production, selective multiple rip saw, and computer-controlled optimizing cross-cut saws.  This machinery is linked by a series of chain and belt conveyors to minimize handling of sound parts and waste.  Bundled lumber is loaded by fork lift onto chains feeding the double surfacer.  Planed boards are transported by conveyor to the rip sawyer for setting the rip pattern and then into the rip saw.  Ripped strips move past a sorting area where clear, full-length blanks can be stacked for strapping or other processing.  Strips requiring defecting and cutting to length proceed to marking stations where operators grade and mark defects.  The marked strips then flow into one or two optimizing saws for cross-cutting.  Clear blocks in specific lengths are conveyed to an automatic sorting line and are stacked for shipment or subsequent machining.  Random length pieces are sorted by width into bins.  These bins feed parts on demand to re-rip saws which remove wane edges and then to a finger jointer.

The output of the typical line is (i) solid clear pieces cut to specific length, width, and thickness and (ii) fingerjointed blanks of specific length, width, and thickness.

Subsequent machining in these operations includes resawing, moulding, edge gluing, and primer coating.
